Create your own video game

January 1st, 2009 · Type: Rpg Maker Tutorial

Want to create your own videogames? Here’s a quick tutorial to easily get yourself started. No formal education required. First things first, you’ll need a game idea. These are easy to come by if you use tools like a videogame generator or rpg title generator. Keep your own video game idea simple! You don’t want your first creation to be some gigantic MMO thing you’ll spend years trying to finish. Most people who want to make games fall into that trap and never get anything completed.

Download a creation tool program like Rpg Maker XP or Rpg Maker VX by Enterbrain. These aren’t free outside the demo period, but they get the job done. You can easily create your own video game during the 30 day free trials these Rpg maker programs offer. There’s also programs like Verge, Rpg Toolkit, Game Maker, ika, Sphere, and others - some of which are free alternatives.

Once you have the game itself done, post it on forums for feedback and downloads. There’s plenty of forums dedicated to creating video games. Don’t forget to post it on boards for game players as well if you’re a member of one! Most developers who create them don’t take the time to play others.

This is a pretty simple tutorial, but that’s the entire point. Want to create your own video games? Then do it. Don’t spend all day perfecting it or reading gigantic tutorials. Don’t try to create your dream. Just finish up something, get feedback from players, and do something better once you’ve got practice under your belt.
