6 tricks to get more player responses
Have you noticed how hard it is to get replies to projects these days? People who enjoyed the game aren’t even likely to pop back and say “thanks”, unless they wanted the game to be even better. Here’s a few great tricks to get them to leave their thoughts & comments:
- Difficulty. Brain teasing puzzles and combats that require strategies. Used sparingly, they’re a great way to get players to ask for help in your project threads. You’ll even have others who’ve completed them answering for you! Be careful not to overuse them - people will get sick of your game.
- Mystery. Everyone loves a good story that makes them think a bit about what’s going on. Don’t spoil or reveal everything! Leave questions at every turn, enough that people are bound to ask you about them. Don’t reveal anything without adding another mysterious element or two into your RPG stew.
- Misdirection. Much like mystery, but carefully reveal more information, and have things turn out to be the opposite of what the player expected. This will attract replies of them saying so - exactly what you wanted.
- Bugs. Intentional or not, people will find and report glitches. How can you make this apply to your game? What can you break somehow that people will want to talk about?
- Bribery. You can’t go wrong with this one. Make something ingame that the players will want (ultimate equipment, more dungeons, the ending, etc), and let them know in the game that you’ll give them access to it somehow in return for their feedback. Try to make however it’s accessed randomized a bit, so people won’t share their ways of reaching it to avoid messaging you.
- Cliffhanger. We hate them, but we love to hate them too. Try not to release a demo without one unless it’s the real thing. You won’t just get more replies, everyone who’s played the game and wanting more will be wondering what happens next.
Remember not to go overboard with any of these suggestions. You might not even want them all in the same game. A fun experience for everyone who plays your creations should be the top priority.
